Nobody will tell you that you need to buy advertising and keywords in order to make a successful blog. In fact, finding the correct niche can be a marketing strategy within itself. There are several tools available to bloggers to help determine niches. Google's AdWord Keyword tool being one of them. Using Google's tool, you can determine how often a specific keyword is being search and with that you can determine if your keyword choices are viable options for your blog.
